How Long Does a First Aid Certificate Last in Australia?

Australia does not have one universal expiry date for every first aid certificate. A Statement of Attainment records completed training; whether that training is still current and accepted depends on the role, sector, regulator and organisation checking it.

Fast answer: the workplace model Code recommends annual CPR refreshers and renewing first aid qualifications every three years. Education and care services have prescribed one-year and three-year currency rules. A written employer, licence, placement or professional-body requirement can be stricter.

Australian Renewal And Currency Quick Reference

Jurisdiction warning: Safe Work Australia develops model guidance but is not your workplace safety regulator. Annual CPR and three-year first aid intervals are model-Code recommendations, not one mandatory national expiry law for every Australian worker. Check whether the Code has legal effect in your jurisdiction.

Certificate, Qualification And Statement Of Attainment

People often say “first aid certificate”, but HLTAID009, HLTAID011 and similar codes are units of competency in the national vocational education and training system. Successful completion is normally recorded on a Statement of Attainment. A qualification testamur is different: it confirms completion of a complete Australian Qualifications Framework qualification.

The Statement of Attainment remains evidence that the listed units were achieved. A workplace or regulator can nevertheless decide that the underlying skills are no longer recent enough for the present role. That is why unqualified claims that a certificate “expires” or “never expires” are both misleading.

AttainmentWhat training the person successfully completed
CurrencyWhether the training is recent enough for the present framework
AcceptanceWhether the organisation accepts the unit, date and provider

A USI VET transcript can help verify nationally recognised training. It does not replace the original certification document issued by the RTO. If authenticity is in doubt, contact the issuing RTO or follow ASQA’s student-record guidance.

Workplace First Aid Currency

The Safe Work Australia model Code says first aiders should attend regular training to refresh their knowledge, skills and competence. It recommends annual CPR refresher training and renewal of first aid qualifications every three years.

Those intervals are recommendations in model guidance. The legal effect of the Code varies by jurisdiction, and an employer can require more frequent practice because of workplace hazards, remoteness, staffing, industry rules, contracts or the equipment first aiders are expected to use.

A worker whose HLTAID011 was completed two years ago may still be inside the general three-year recommendation while their separately dated HLTAID009 CPR refresher is due. Check individual unit dates, not only the most recent document date.

ACECQA And Education-And-Care Currency

Education and care services covered by the National Regulations have prescribed currency periods. Approved first aid qualifications, anaphylaxis-management training and emergency-asthma-management training are current when attained or undertaken within the previous three years. Emergency life-support and CPR training must have been completed within the previous year.

Currency applies to each component. A recent multi-unit course does not make an older, separately dated component current. Services must also check that the training is approved; the code and course should be checked against ACECQA’s current approved information rather than inferred from a provider’s marketing name.

Attendance requirements differ between centre-based services, school-site services and family day care. Read the school and childcare first aid guide, then confirm the rule that applies to the service and individual worker.

Employer, Licence And Placement Requirements

Employers, placements, licence issuers and professional bodies can impose shorter periods or insist on an exact unit code. A placement may require CPR completed within six months even though another framework uses one year. A remote worksite may require annual practical refreshers for all first aiders because medical help can be delayed.

Obtain the requirement in writing before booking. Use the Australian HLTAID course selector to identify the likely unit scope, but let the organisation requiring the training confirm the exact code and maximum age it accepts.

Check that the record shows the exact unit code and title, issuing RTO and RTO code, completion or issue date and correct learner name. A generic attendance certificate is not automatically equivalent to a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment.

How To Verify A Record And Plan Renewal

Read every unit and date separately

A single Statement of Attainment can list several units completed on the same day, while a USI transcript can show units accumulated through different providers and years. Record the code, title and attainment date for each relevant unit. This prevents a new first aid component from being mistaken for a new CPR date, or an old asthma component from being hidden by a more recent document issue date.

Check the provider and scope

Use training.gov.au to confirm the provider’s legal RTO name and registration status and to see whether the exact current unit is on scope. A polished course website, familiar trading name or instant digital badge does not itself prove that nationally recognised training will be issued. Before paying, ask which unit codes a successful learner receives and how practical evidence will be assessed.

Use the USI record as verification, not replacement

A USI VET transcript is useful when a paper document is lost, dates are unclear or an employer needs to verify nationally recognised training. The USI office states that the transcript does not replace the RTO-issued certificate or Statement of Attainment. If an RTO has closed, follow ASQA’s student-record guidance and the relevant regulator process rather than purchasing a “replacement” from an unrelated business.

Set reminders from the rule that actually applies

Once the organisation confirms its requirement, calculate the next calendar anniversary for each component and set an earlier planning reminder. Allow time for course availability, identity checks, practical assessment, processing and placement onboarding. A reminder service offered by a training provider is convenient, but it is not the legal source of the currency rule.

Recheck when the role changes

Moving from an office to remote work, starting childcare employment, taking a clinical placement or becoming responsible for oxygen equipment can change both the unit and currency requirement. Do not assume that a still-current general first aid record covers a new setting. Compare the written duty with the course-code selector and obtain confirmation before relying on it.

Find the regulator for the workplace jurisdiction

Safe Work Australia publishes model guidance; Commonwealth, state and territory authorities regulate and enforce workplace safety law. Use the official WHS regulator contact list to reach the authority for the jurisdiction, then check industry and employer requirements as well.

Real-World Australian Renewal Scenarios

Office first aider

Priya completed HLTAID011 two years ago but last completed CPR fourteen months ago. Under model guidance, broad first aid renewal is not yet at three years, but the annual CPR refresher is due.

Childcare educator

Daniel completed HLTAID012 eleven months ago. The first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis components are within three years and CPR is within the previous year. The service still verifies approval and dates.

Family day care

Mia completed emergency-asthma training three years and one month ago. It sits outside the prescribed ACECQA period. Another person’s current training does not make Mia’s component current.

University placement

A student completed CPR ten months ago, but the placement requires CPR within six months before starting. The written placement requirement controls acceptance.

Remote worksite

An exploration company requires annual practical refreshers because help may be delayed. That policy can be more frequent than the model Code’s general first aid recommendation.

Superseded code

Alex holds older HLTAID003 evidence. It remains a record, but an employer asking for current HLTAID011 may require retraining or explicit acceptance of the older unit.

Sports club volunteer

A volunteer’s older Statement of Attainment remains evidence of training. The club can still require recent CPR or a current first aid unit before placing that person on its response roster.

Aged-care placement

A learner has CPR within the general one-year period, but the placement handbook requires a more recent date. The learner follows the placement’s written rule and confirms the exact code before booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does HLTAID011 expire after three years?

There is no single universal legal expiry date applying to every holder. The Safe Work Australia model Code recommends renewing first aid qualifications every three years. Employers, regulators and sectors may set their own currency rules.

Does HLTAID009 expire after 12 months?

Annual CPR refreshers are recommended in the workplace model Code. In education and care services, CPR must have been completed within the previous year to be current. Other organisations can set their own period.

Does my Statement of Attainment disappear when training is no longer current?

No. It remains a record of the units attained unless it is formally cancelled or corrected. The organisation checking it may still decide that the skill is not current enough for the role.

If HLTAID011 includes CPR, must I repeat the entire course yearly?

Not necessarily. Many organisations require annual CPR currency while using a longer period for broad first aid training. Confirm which unit must be refreshed and which codes must appear on the new Statement of Attainment.

Can my employer require renewal earlier?

Yes. An employer can apply role-specific training and competency requirements based on risk, policy, contract, industry rules or regulator expectations.

Is an old or superseded first aid code still valid?

It remains evidence of historical attainment unless cancelled, but it may not meet a current requirement naming a newer unit. Ask the organisation requiring the training.

Is my first aid certificate recognised interstate?

Nationally recognised training records can be verified across Australia, but workplace, licensing, placement and sector acceptance can vary. Check the relevant jurisdiction and organisation.

Can I use my USI transcript instead of the certificate?

A USI transcript can help verify nationally recognised training, but it does not replace the certificate or Statement of Attainment issued by the RTO.

What if the RTO has closed?

Check the USI transcript and ASQA student-record guidance. Do not buy a replacement certificate from an unrelated provider.

What date should the renewal tool use?

Use the completion or attainment date applying to the individual unit, not an email reminder date or merely the date a multi-unit document was downloaded.
